October is Mental Health Awareness Month; in November, National Disability Rights Awareness is celebrated in South Africa.
Mental illness should be treated with the same empathy and commitment as other illnesses. It is not something mystical, evil or deserved, and help is available.
The differently abled should be seen in a humanistic and cultural way, as a unique demographic that brings its own contribution to society.
